RADEX: a new way to fight against terrorism

In recent years governments and institutions have dedicated their efforts to improve protection against urban terrorism.  Some current economic theories provide a strong basis for arguing that cities can withstand terrorist attacks. Places with huge daily volume of passengers were the target of many terroristic attacks and the forecasted increase of world urban mass transportation demands an increased level of security that is socially and economically acceptable. STANDEX (Stand-off detection of explosives) is a NATO program defined to develop an explosive warning system designed to work in existing mass transit infrastructures.
The whole STANDEX system use technologies which do not require any physical contact with the passengers, as microwave imaging and dielectric measurements, video tracking and alarm triggering system and Raman spectroscopy performed with eye safe lasers for traces detection.

The RADEX system was designed to identify minutes  amount of particulate explosive matter on bombers clothes by using the Raman spectroscopy, a particular technology for the molecular identification, based on the interaction of a laser beam with the  vibrational modes of a molecule. By analysing the light scattered from the sample, it is possible to obtain the Raman spectrum, the can be considered as the molecule ’s  fingerprint.

Recently, terrorist used improvised explosive device assembled from precursors available on the supermarket’s shelf. Handling, transportation and packaging of these materials almost inevitably cause contamination of the clothing and other possessions, as luggage, of these persons.
But let's have a look at the operating principle. The passenger activates the fotocellula,  which triggers the laser. A eye-safe laser beam is focused on the passenger the Raman scattered radiationis collected by the telescope and imaged onto the entrance of a Raman spectrometer. The radiation is then analysed giving a spectrum suitable for the explosive detection and identification. If the clothes are contaminated, the alarm will be turned on.

Presently, the RADEX systems the state of art for stand-off detection of explosive traces in respect to the international safe regulations.”
All the components developed in the  STANDEX program will show their functionality through a demonstration in real conditions, in a Paris metro station"
